Wise County, Texas (December 3, 2017) – Two people were injured in a major multi-vehicle collision on US 81/287 Friday morning, according to Rhome Police Department.
The crash occurred at about 7 a.m. Friday, December 1 on U.S. 81/287 just north of Rhome.
Police said 21-year-old Colton Batterton of Newark was driving a Dodge pickup south on US 81/287 when he attempted to overtake an 18-wheeler. The rear bumper of the Dodge clipped the front bumper of the 18-wheeler causing Batterton to lose control of the Dodge.
The Dodge rolled and landed in the northbound lanes of the highway striking a Ford SUV, driven by 30-year-old Jeffery Sanders. The collision caused the vehicles to roll over and both landed upside down.
Batterton and Sanders were transported to Wise Health System in Decatur. Sanders was later airlifted to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth with internal injuries.
The crash caused a shutdown of the northbound lanes of the highway as the scene was cleared.
