La Porte, Houston (September 23, 2017) – A woman was critically injured in DUI crash on Wednesday evening in La Porte.
The collision happened on Wednesday, September 6, in La Porte.
According to Schoppe’s mother-in-law, Schoppe was a businesswoman who baked cookies, and her life was cut short when she was taking the cookies to Memorial Hermann Hospital for doctors and nurses who had been working long hours due to Hurricane Harvey.
According to Schoppe’s family, Schoppe’s SUV was smashed by a drunk driver, James Hutchins, 27.
The impact of the crash caused Schoppe to sustain multiple injuries including a broken hip, broken legs and severely damaged arms which led her to undergo several surgeries.
Hutchins was also hurt in the wreck. However, Hutchins blood sample showed the alcohol level in the blood was more than twice the legal limit, as per court documents.
DPS said that Hutchins has been charged with intoxication assault and was on probation for a drug charge at the time the accident occurred.
La Porte police said Hutchins remained under as he goes into the surgery without police custody which stems from insufficient resources in the department. Unfortunately, Hutchins reportedly fled the scene after surgery.
