Maria Mendoza Killed, Lydia Smith and Sierra Garcia Injured in Caldwell County Crash on Texas 80

Caldwell County, Texas (May 21, 2018) – A 73-year-old Houston woman was killed and two other people were injured in a two-car accident near Luling in Caldwell County Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
The crash happened at around 3:41 p.m. Sunday, May 20 on Texas 80, one mile north of Luling.
DPS officials said Sierra Jade Garcia, 20, was driving a 2015 Mazda CX5 southbound on Texas 80 when her vehicle crossed the double yellow lines and into the path of 2014 Ford Fusion operated by Maria De Jesus Mendoza.
Garcia’s vehicle struck Mendoza’s left headlight.
Mendoza was taken to Seton Medical Center Hays where she succumbed to her injuries.
76-year-old Lydia Smith was traveling with Mendoza at the time of the collision and remains hospitalized in Kyle, along with Garcia.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
