Ernesto Gonzales ID’d as Man Killed in South Austin Pedestrian Accident on South First Street and West Ben White Boulevard

Austin, Texas (August 3, 2018) – The man who was fatally struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene after the incident on Wednesday morning in south Austin has been identified as Ernesto Gonzales, 40.
According to the Austin Police Department, the crash happened at about 8 a.m. Wednesday, August 1 on South First Street and West Ben White Boulevard.
Police said police said a man operating a white truck was stopped at a red light on West Ben White Boulevard when he drifted into the sidewalk after the lights turned green.
The truck struck Gonzales who was walking on the sidewalk near a bus stop.
The driver reportedly got out of the truck to check on the victim,  then went back and drove off before police arrived.
Police said Gonzales died at the scene of the crash.
The suspected driver was later located and was identified as Darrell Smitty, 52. Police said Smitty was taken to a hospital for treatment, and was later booked into the Travis County Jail on charges of hit-and-run.
