Deemora Benson Dies after Hit-And-Run Crash on I-35 near East 7th Street in Downtown Austin, August 18
Austin, Texas (September 7, 2018) – A woman who was hospitalized after being struck by a hit-and-run driver last month in downtown Austin has succumbed to her injuries.
The crash occurred at around 2:30 a.m. on August 18 on the southbound frontage road on I-35 near East 7th Street.
According to the police, Deemora Benson, 19, was attempting to run across the frontage road when she was struck by an SUV.
Benson was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center with a brain bleed. The authorities said the victim was pronounced deceased on Sunday, September 2.
The driver of the vehicle involved fled the scene but later turned himself in. He was identified as Felipe Hernandez, 21.
Police said Hernandez was taken into custody on suspicion of hit-and-run. It’s unclear whether there were other charges against the suspect.
The crash is under investigation.
