Darrell Sonnier and Donald Sterling Injured in Jefferson County Crash on Highway 365 near Interstate 10
Jefferson County, Texas (November 30, 2018) – Two people were hospitalized Thursday afternoon in Jefferson County following a traffic collision involving three dump trucks, the Texas Department of Public Safety reported.
The major collision was reported at around 2:15 p.m. Thursday, November 29 on FM 365, just five miles north of Interstate 10.
According to the report, a Mack dump truck driven by Darrell Sonnier, 50, of Nome, was pulling out from a private driveway when it failed to yield the right of way and pulled out into the path of a 1989 International dump truck, which was heading southbound on FM 365.
Both dump trucks then collided and traveled into the northbound traffic lanes where a second crash occurred with a third dump truck.
Sonnier sustained non-life threatening injuries and the International dump truck operator, Donald Sterling, 46, of Kountze, suffered major injuries, both were taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth hospital.
Richard Martel, 60, of Winnie, who was the driver of the third dump truck, was unhurt.
The crash caused diesel fuel to spill out onto the road closing northbound and southbound lanes of FM 365 for several hours. HazMat teams were dispatched to the scene to perform cleaning.
The crash remains under investigation.
