1 Dies, Clarence Whitaker Injured in Jefferson Car Accident on Texas 43 near Lewis Chapel Road

Jefferson, Texas (August 25, 2019) – One person was killed and another was injured Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Jefferson, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The fatal crash was reported at about 1:40 p.m. Friday, August 23 on Texas 43, just south of Lewis Chapel Road, about 12 miles from Jefferson.

The DPS said Clarence Whitaker, 61, of Jefferson, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu northbound on Texas 43 when their vehicle was hit from behind by a Ford F-150 that was also heading northbound.

The Chevrolet then drifted off the roadway to the left and rolled multiple times before coming to a stop while the Ford veered off the road to the right where it struck a tree and burst into flames.

The Ford driver was pronounced at the scene. Whitaker was taken to Christus Good Shepard-Marshall in serious condition.

No further details were immediately available.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
